The display is interactive, so that the user can, for example, inspect gain values by holding the mouse pointer over the relevant section. Perhaps the most visually distinctive upgrade is the Meter Bridge, which provides a real-time 3D spectrogram that includes Freeze and Zoom modes as well as a 2D option. The new 3D scrolling Meter Bridge is only available in the Advanced version of Ozone 5. As the upgrade is so comprehensive, I'll look at each of the modules in turn. Also on the upgrade list are new and easier-to-access presets, improved signal routing and additional controls. The hybrid Reverb module has also benefited from an extensive makeover, with new room models added, while the Exciter can now emulate different types of analogue distortion based on tape, tubes and so on. The designers also claim to have improved the processing algorithms, including their analogue modelling and the new IRC III limiter used in the Maximizer section. Module presets saved in earlier incarnations of Ozone will open in the separate component plug-ins of Ozone 5 Advanced, so there should be no backwards compatibility issues. Even the loudness meters have been upgraded to show levels according to BS 1770-2, EBU, K-System and True Peak standards, as well as RMS, with the various types available from within the Options section of the plug-in, along with other key settings and preferences. User-configurable meters provide additional display options showing spectrum, phase, vectorscope and level histograms, where you can, for example, see a history of compressor gain reduction scrolling by. The standard version of Ozone 5 has no Meter Bridge and no way to use the components separately, but otherwise offers most of the same functionality. All are now available as separate component plug-ins, as well as within the master Ozone 5 plug-in, which combines access, routing and control for all the individual processing sections, and for the new Meter Bridge. Ozone 5 Advanced is the latest incarnation of Izotope's well-established mastering suite, and now comprises seven modules: Maximizer, Equalizer, Multi-band Dynamics, Multi-band Stereo Imaging, Meter Bridge, Multi-band Harmonic Exciter and Reverb. In Ozone 5 Advanced, the modules can be run within the main plug-in, as here showing the EQ, or as separate plug-ins, as shown in the other screen shots. Izotope's do-everything mastering suite expands again, with a new Advanced version offering even more user control. ![]() ![]() ![]() When ready to proceed to the next step, click the “Use” button to select a template. If your graphics card is going to crash or start tossing out funky visual artifacts, it will do so within 15 to 30 minutes. Stick to the standard burn-in test, but keep an eye on HWMonitor and/or SpeedFan-FurMark gets your GPU very hot, very quickly. Yay efficiency!īenchmarking tools abound, but FurMark was designed specifically to give your GPU a stress-inducing workout and punishes graphics cards much harder than the average game. Another bonus: Graphic torture tests usually coax underpowered or faulty power supplies into giving up the ghost, so you’re stressing two birds with one stone. If you’re a gamer, stress testing your graphics card is a no-brainer, especially since graphics cards tend to fail under heavier loads-you know, like the ones generated by top-end games. Verifying your video card’s stability Nope, that’s not the eye of Sauron, it’s the FurMark stress test. If you run into an error, you’ll have to retest each RAM module individually to identify which is the problem child. Once it’s up and running, let the software do its thing for a long time-preferably overnight once again. Simply burn MemTest86+ to a flash drive or CD, insert it into your PC, and then boot your computer to the media type you’re using. ![]() This tried-and-true diagnostic software has been around seemingly forever, and while it definitely looks its age-MemTest86+ rocks an ugly BIOS-esque interface-the program is just as effective now as it always has been. When it comes to seriously testing RAM, only one option is worth considering: MemTest86+. But if your CPU survives all that, it’s definitely a keeper. Personally, I like to stress-test new PCs using Prime95’s Blend and Small FFT tests for at least twelve hours apiece, and I sometimes follow it up with an hour-long, High or Very High stress level IntelBurnTest run. ![]() ![]() No matter which testing program you choose, run it for at least four hours a full overnight run is preferable. Both hit your processor hard and ramp temperatures up very rapidly, however, so keep a close eye on your system-monitoring software when you first start them up. Hard-core types also hold IntelBurnTest and OCCT-two other CPU-stressing programs-in high regard. Want a second opinion? Different programs test CPUs in different ways. IntelBurnTest is a nonofficial, user-friendly version of Intel’s brutal Linpack benchmark. If your rig can run Prime95’s Small FFT test for a full 24 hours without issue, the CPU is as solid as a rock and ready to fold. Prime95 sometimes catches CPU errors even after half a day of testing. If you have the time (and adequate cooling), feel free to “torture” your PC with Prime95 for much, much longer, particularly if you plan to use your computer for projects, which can consume a ton of CPU resources for extended periods. Alternatively, the Small FFT and Large FFT torture tests lay off the RAM a bit to subject the CPU to as much respective stress and heat as possible. Blend stresses both the CPU and RAM if no errors pop up after four hours or so, you can consider it stable for normal use. Open the program, then head to Options > Torture Test to bring up a list of options. Ostensibly designed to find Mersenne prime numbers, the software absolutely hammers your processor, to the point that the developers now include a dedicated “Torture Test” mode for people who are interested in system stability than complex mathematics. While a handful of programs are available that can stress your CPU to its limits, Prime95 has become the de facto standard. Prime95 includes three different “torture” tests. It’s that important-and it’s frequently the culprit behind an unstable system. If you stress-test only a single component, stress-test your CPU. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Whether you’re a novice or an experienced user, this software provides a simple, intuitive way to customize your display’s brightness and contrast, quickly and easily.
